Tax-free shopping in Turkey

Yes. Visitors who don't live in Turkey can get back the 20% VAT (KDV) on purchases of at least TRY 1,200.01 by claiming the VAT (KDV) refund before they leave.

Who can claim

  • You live outside Turkey. Foreigners holding a Turkish residence permit do not qualify.
  • Turkish citizens qualify only if they live abroad.

How to get the money back

  1. Shop at a store showing a tax-free logo and ask for a tax-free invoice or form with your passport.
  2. Keep the goods unused and carry them with the original invoice.
  3. Before check-in, show the goods, invoice, passport and boarding pass to Turkish customs for certification.
  4. Collect the refund at the operator's desk or send the certified documents to the store or operator.

Where to validate: At Turkish customs at your departure airport, port or border gate, before check-in and passport control.

Worth knowing

  • Many travel guides still quote old minimums (TRY 108, 118 or 200); the legal minimum is over TRY 1,000 before VAT per invoice.
  • Only stores authorised by the tax office can sell tax-free, so ask before you pay.
