Minimum basis: Per invoice: €50 before VAT, which is €61.50 including the 23% mainland rate

Who can claim

  • Your habitual residence is outside the EU, proven with an official ID.
  • You buy for personal use, not commercial purposes.

How to get the money back

  1. Show your passport at the till and ask for a tax-free invoice; the store registers it in e-TaxFree Portugal.
  2. Keep the goods unused and with you.
  3. At your last EU exit point, scan your passport or form at an e-TaxFree kiosk.
  4. Green result: done. Otherwise, take the goods and form to customs (Alfândega).
  5. Collect the refund from the operator or store by the method you chose.

Where to validate: At an e-TaxFree kiosk (or the customs office if it fails) at your LAST EU exit point.

Deadline: Goods must leave the EU before the end of the third month after the month of purchase (e.g. bought in June, export by 30 September).

Paid out as: Card; Cash at airport refund desk (extra fee)

Visiting several EU countries? Validate at your last EU exit, wherever you bought the goods.

Not refundable

  • Services (hotels, restaurants, car hire)
  • Goods for commercial use
  • Goods used or consumed in the EU

Worth knowing

  • The €50 minimum is before VAT, so check the pre-tax total on the invoice.
  • Madeira and the Azores have lower VAT rates than the mainland 23%, so refunds there are smaller.
