Who can claim
- You are leaving Australia on an international flight or voyage (overseas visitors and Australian residents both qualify).
- You are not operating air or sea crew.
How to get the money back
- Buy from one business totalling A$300 or more incl. GST and get a tax invoice with the seller's ABN.
- Optionally enter your claim in advance in the ABF TRS app or web app to get a QR code.
- Carry the goods in hand luggage (large or oversize goods: show them to the ABF before check-in).
- After passport control, go to the TRS facility with goods, original invoices, passport and boarding pass.
- Choose card or Australian bank account for the refund.
Where to validate: At the ABF TRS facility in the international departure area after passport control, at least 30 minutes before departure (airports); allow 1 to 4 hours at sea ports.
Deadline: Goods must be bought within 60 days before departure; claim no later than 30 minutes before your flight leaves.
Paid out as: Credit card; Australian bank account; Cheque
Not refundable
- Alcohol other than wine (up to 22% alcohol)
- Tobacco products
- Goods fully or partly used in Australia
- Services (hotels, tours, car hire)
Worth knowing
- Aim to reach the TRS queue about 90 minutes before your flight; queues are long at peak times.
- The TRS is run by the government and charges no fee, so you get back 1/11 of the price (about 9.09%), plus WET on wine.
- If you are an Australian resident, declare the goods when you bring them back or you may owe the GST.
