Why Dominica rewards careful timing.
Dominica is the Caribbean's most mountainous and rain-rich island, Morne Diablotins (1,447m) and Morne Trois Pitons (1,387m) generate orographic rain year-round. Coastal climate: 22–32°C; highland: 15–25°C with much more rain.
Tropical-Caribbean pattern (with Caribbean's narrowest dry season):
- Dry season (February–May): clear skies, lower humidity, ideal for hiking (especially Boiling Lake).
- Rainy season (June–January): longer than most Caribbean islands due to mountainous terrain. Heavy afternoon rains. Hurricane risk significant June–November. Hurricane Maria (2017) devastated the island.
Best months:
- March–April: peak, driest, ideal for hiking.
- February and May: shoulder peaks.
- June–July: light hurricane risk; lower hotel rates.
- September–October: peak hurricane risk.
Festivals worth scheduling around:
- Carnival (early February, Mas Domnik, the 'real Carnival'): smaller and more authentic than Trinidad's.
- DOMFESTA (Dominica Festival of Arts, May): cultural celebration.
- World Creole Music Festival (late October): international Creole/Zouk artists.
- Independence Day (November 3): parades, traditional dress.
- Christmas-New Year: peak tourism.
Currency: Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD), fixed at 2.7 XCD = 1 USD. USD widely accepted. Card acceptance widespread.
