The Worst Month to Travel, Computed: August Fails in 77 of 199 Countries

Rate every country on Earth for every month of the year and you get 2,388 verdicts: 199 countries, 12 months each, each month tagged best, ok, or avoid in our when-to-visit dataset. August loses on both ends of that table. It collects 77 avoid ratings, more than any other month, and only 72 best ratings, fewer than any other month.

It is also, per Eurostat, the peak month for tourist nights in 174 of the EU's 244 regions, and one of the two busiest months on the planet for international arrivals.

The world's favorite travel month is the worst-rated one.

The calendar, ranked

December is the winner: 104 of 199 countries rate best, the only month above half. The northern winter as a whole outrates the northern summer — February's 98 best beats June, July, and August — because most of the tropics run their dry season from roughly December to February. The travel calendar most people carry in their heads is a Northern European weather chart wearing a globe costume.

And March is the safest month on Earth: exactly one country to avoid. It's Mongolia, where the steppe is still locked in extreme cold. Every other place is at worst "ok".

Why August fails

The dataset attaches a reason tag to every rating, from a 19-term glossary. August's 77 avoids break down like this: monsoon (25 countries), extreme heat (24), hurricane season (12), heavy rain (6), typhoon season (5), heavy humidity (1), and — my favorite category — peak crowds and prices (4).

The monsoon block is South and Southeast Asia; the heat block runs from the Gulf across North Africa; the hurricane column is the Caribbean, and the typhoon column is East Asia. Ordinary physics, all of it.

The four countries rated avoid purely for crowds are Italy, Spain, Malta, and Vatican City. Their weather is fine. The rating is a warning about the other people reading this sentence. There is something almost elegant about a month so popular that the popularity itself becomes the reason to stay home; Florence in August is a queue with Renaissance architecture attached.

August doesn't dominate travel because anyone chose it on merit. School calendars chose it, a century ago, and 174 EU regions' hotel prices still obey them.

Where August actually works

Seventy-two countries rate best in August, and they follow a pattern: the southern hemisphere's dry season, the high Andes, East Africa, and Europe's northern edge. Cross-referencing our daily-budget data (bare-bones traveler, 135 countries covered), the cheapest of them:

Note Mongolia: the only country on Earth to avoid in March is an $11-a-day best pick in August. And the Kenya row is the migration in the Mara, in the dry season, for less per day than a Lisbon hostel bed.

Sri Lanka needs its caveat spelled out, because the country runs on two monsoons: the south and west coasts are best December to March, while August belongs to the east and north. Go to the wrong coast and the $7 is the only thing that still works.

One footnote on the only perfect score

A single country rates best in all 12 months: the United States. Before anyone in Phoenix laughs — that's a rating artifact of judging a continent as one row. Somewhere between Alaska, Florida, and Hawaii, some region is always in season; the label averages away the 47°C parts. Country-level data has country-sized blind spots, and this is the biggest one in the file.
