We pulled five years of daily weather for the capital of every country we rate and checked whether our best/avoid months match the actual sky. Verdict: 92% agreement, one coherent cluster of dissent, one rating we now think is wrong, and one lesson about capitals.

We pulled 12 months of exchange rates for the currency of all 133 countries in our cost dataset. Only 31 moved more than 5%, and two-thirds of those moved against you. Then we subtracted inflation, and Turkey and Argentina flipped from best deals to worst.

We crossed 2,388 monthly ratings with daily-cost floors for 132 countries. There is no month of the year with fewer than 16 countries that are both in their best season and under $15 a day. Off-season discounts are for people who refuse to change destination.

In May we verified every fact in our 82 published country guides. In August we checked them all again: 54 needed corrections. Fees, portals, one war, one relocated Grand Prix, and three errors that were ours.

Our when-to-visit dataset rates 2,388 country-months. August collects 77 'avoid' ratings, the most of any month, and the fewest 'best'. December wins the calendar. March is the safest. Everyone books August anyway.

13 countries already charge for entry they call visa-free. When ETIAS launches, 1,770 visa-free entries (13.8% of the world's total) get a €20 form overnight, and the toll-booth club grows to 43.

We mirrored all 12,871 visa-free entries in the July 2026 passport matrix. 4,451 of them are one-way. Ranked: who holds doors open for passports that stay shut.
