Why Zambia rewards careful timing.
Zambia is landlocked at altitude (most of the country at 1,000–1,400m), temperatures are moderated by elevation. Lusaka at 1,279m averages 17–28°C; safari areas like Luangwa and Lower Zambezi at lower altitudes (500–600m) are hotter (22–38°C).
Dry season (May–October) is the headline tourism window. June through October is peak, bracing dawn temperatures (8–14°C in highveld, 12–16°C at Luangwa), warming to comfortable-to-hot 22–32°C midday, no rain, wildlife concentrated at remaining water sources. August through October are the hottest dry-season months, Luangwa and Zambezi pools shrink, predator action peaks. September is the consensus best month for South Luangwa safari.
Wet season (November–April), the 'Emerald Season': heaviest rains December–February. South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi, Kafue largely close through January–March; many camps reduce schedules. Roads impassable. Hotel rates 50–70% off peak at camps that remain open. Reward: lush green landscapes, baby animals everywhere, peak photography skies, very few tourists, and Liuwa Plain wildebeest migration in November–December (Africa's second-largest wildebeest migration after Serengeti).
Victoria Falls specifically (Livingstone/Zambian side):
- February–May (peak flow): maximum water, spectacular volume but the falls can be obscured by mist. Devil's Pool closed (water too high).
- June–August (sweet spot): balanced flow, comfortable, photographic, classic.
- September–December (low flow): lower water, better visibility, Devil's Pool swim opens at Livingstone Island (the rim-of-falls swimming hole), peak in October.
Festivals:
- Kuomboka ceremony (Litunga's royal annual move from floodplain to highland): typically late February or March (date set by Lozi king in advance).
- Likumbi Lya Mize (Luvale festival): late August, Zambezi District.
- Independence Day: October 24.
- Mufuwa-N'cwala festival (first fruits ceremony): late January or early February.
Currency: Zambian Kwacha (ZMW), roughly 24 ZMW = $1 USD in 2026. USD widely accepted at safari camps and Vic Falls activities. Card acceptance at major hotels and Lusaka establishments. ATMs in Lusaka, Livingstone, Mfuwe (South Luangwa airstrip).
