◉ When to visit

Zambia.

May–Oct dry season — peak for Victoria Falls (high water Apr/May, low Sep/Oct) and South Luangwa safari.

◉ Quick answer

The best time to visit Zambia is May–Sep. Avoid Dec–Feb if you can.

◉ Overview

Zambia is the birthplace of the walking safari (pioneered by Norman Carr in the South Luangwa Valley in the 1950s) and offers some of Africa's most pristine, low-volume safari experiences. The country shares Victoria Falls with Zimbabwe (Livingstone is the Zambian gateway), and the Zambia side has the rim experience including the famous Devil's Pool swim in low-water months.

The country runs on a southern-hemisphere wet/dry split. Dry season (May–October) is the marquee safari window with wildlife concentrating at remaining water sources, vegetation thinning, and South Luangwa walking safaris at peak. Wet season (November–April) brings rains, especially heavy December–February, many safari camps close in the 'emerald season', though some operators offer green-season specialty trips.

The headline destinations: Victoria Falls (Livingstone), South Luangwa National Park (walking safari capital, leopards, hippos along the Luangwa River), Lower Zambezi National Park (canoe safaris, elephants and hippos along the Zambezi), Kafue National Park (Zambia's largest, lions and Liuwa Plain wildebeest migration), Bangweulu Wetlands (shoebill stork, black lechwe).

Visa-on-arrival ($25–80) or KAZA UniVisa $50 for Zambia + Zimbabwe combined. Currency: Zambian Kwacha (ZMW), USD widely accepted at safari camps. English is the official language.

Section 01

Why Zambia rewards careful timing.

Zambia is landlocked at altitude (most of the country at 1,000–1,400m), temperatures are moderated by elevation. Lusaka at 1,279m averages 17–28°C; safari areas like Luangwa and Lower Zambezi at lower altitudes (500–600m) are hotter (22–38°C).

Dry season (May–October) is the headline tourism window. June through October is peak, bracing dawn temperatures (8–14°C in highveld, 12–16°C at Luangwa), warming to comfortable-to-hot 22–32°C midday, no rain, wildlife concentrated at remaining water sources. August through October are the hottest dry-season months, Luangwa and Zambezi pools shrink, predator action peaks. September is the consensus best month for South Luangwa safari.

Wet season (November–April), the 'Emerald Season': heaviest rains December–February. South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi, Kafue largely close through January–March; many camps reduce schedules. Roads impassable. Hotel rates 50–70% off peak at camps that remain open. Reward: lush green landscapes, baby animals everywhere, peak photography skies, very few tourists, and Liuwa Plain wildebeest migration in November–December (Africa's second-largest wildebeest migration after Serengeti).

Victoria Falls specifically (Livingstone/Zambian side):

  • February–May (peak flow): maximum water, spectacular volume but the falls can be obscured by mist. Devil's Pool closed (water too high).
  • June–August (sweet spot): balanced flow, comfortable, photographic, classic.
  • September–December (low flow): lower water, better visibility, Devil's Pool swim opens at Livingstone Island (the rim-of-falls swimming hole), peak in October.

Festivals:

  • Kuomboka ceremony (Litunga's royal annual move from floodplain to highland): typically late February or March (date set by Lozi king in advance).
  • Likumbi Lya Mize (Luvale festival): late August, Zambezi District.
  • Independence Day: October 24.
  • Mufuwa-N'cwala festival (first fruits ceremony): late January or early February.

Currency: Zambian Kwacha (ZMW), roughly 24 ZMW = $1 USD in 2026. USD widely accepted at safari camps and Vic Falls activities. Card acceptance at major hotels and Lusaka establishments. ATMs in Lusaka, Livingstone, Mfuwe (South Luangwa airstrip).

Section 02

Regional highlights, Vic Falls, South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi, Kafue.

Victoria Falls (Livingstone side) is the Zambian gateway to the falls. Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park holds the rim path, Knife Edge Bridge, Boiling Pot viewpoint, and Livingstone Island access for Devil's Pool swim (October–December peak, $90 including transfer and lunch). Activities match the Zimbabwe side, bungee, rafting, helicopter, microlight (better aerial views from Zambia side). Plan 2–3 nights. Stay: Royal Livingstone Hotel (riverfront luxury), AVANI Victoria Falls Resort, Tongabezi Lodge.

South Luangwa National Park is the country's headline safari destination and the birthplace of the walking safari (Norman Carr pioneered guest-walking in the 1950s). Famous for: leopards (one of Africa's highest densities), hippos along the Luangwa River, the Luangwa-floodplain ecosystem with massive elephant herds, wild dogs. Walking safaris with experienced guides (typically 4-day mobile foot-safaris with bush camping). Lodges: Mfuwe Lodge, Chinzombo, Time + Tide Chinzombo, Norman Carr's Luangwa River Camp, Mwamba Camp, Tena Tena. Best months: June–October. Reach via Mfuwe Airport (1.5 hours from Lusaka, $200–350 round trip on Proflight). Plan 4–5 nights.

Lower Zambezi National Park along the Zambezi River, canoe safaris are the iconic experience (the Zambezi is broad and slow here; you paddle past elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and feeding bird life). Walking safaris also offered. Lodges: Sausage Tree Camp, Royal Zambezi Lodge, Chongwe River Camp, Old Mondoro. Best months: April–November. Reach via Royal Airstrip (1-hour flight from Lusaka). Plan 3–4 nights.

Kafue National Park is Zambia's largest at 22,400 km², sparsely visited, with lions, leopards, cheetahs, antelope diversity, and the Busanga Plains (massive seasonal floodplain with red lechwe, lion prides on termite mounds). Best months: July–October. Lodges: Wilderness Safaris' Busanga Plains Camp, Shumba Camp. Plan 3–4 nights.

Liuwa Plain National Park in western Zambia, site of Africa's second-largest wildebeest migration (after Serengeti). 70,000 wildebeest gather November–December as rains arrive. Remote and difficult to reach (King Lewanika Lodge by Time + Tide is the main access). Plan 3–4 nights.

North Luangwa National Park (separate from South Luangwa), the only Zambian park supporting all Big Five, including a re-introduced black rhino population. Walking-safari focused with only a few upscale camps (Mwaleshi, Kutandala, Buffalo Camp); described as 'one of the finest wilderness experiences in Africa'. Best months: June–October dry season.

Kasanka National Park, host to Africa's largest mammal migration by individual count: 10+ million straw-colored fruit bats congregate in the Mushitu Forest between late October and mid-December, with peak densities in mid-November. The dusk roost-departure flight is one of Africa's most extraordinary wildlife spectacles. Wasa Lodge and Mukulu Camp offer access. Plan 2–3 nights.

Shiwa Ng'andu ('Africa House') in Northern Province, historic 1920s English-style country estate (built by Stewart Gore-Browne; now operated as a heritage lodge), hidden Kapishya Hot Springs on grounds. Among Zambia's most fascinating cultural-historical sites. Plan 2 nights.

Bangweulu Wetlands in northern Zambia, habitat of the shoebill stork (one of Africa's most prehistoric-looking birds), black lechwe (a swamp-adapted antelope endemic to the area), 600+ bird species. Shoebill Camp (community-managed). Best months: May–July (Zambia's only good shoebill viewing season). Plan 2–3 nights.

Lake Kariba (Zambian side), Bumi Hills, Sindabezi Island; mostly Zimbabwean infrastructure but Zambian access at Siavonga.

Lusaka is the capital, modest tourism interest; transit hub for safari trips. Plan 1 night for arrival/departure orientation.

A clean two-week structure: 2 nights Livingstone (Vic Falls) → 4 nights South Luangwa → 3 nights Lower Zambezi → 4 nights Kafue → 1 night Lusaka return.

Section 03

Practical, visa, transport, currency, safety.

Visa-on-arrival. Single-entry $25 (most Western); double-entry $40; multi-entry $80. KAZA UniVisa ($50, 30 days, multi-entry) covers Zambia + Zimbabwe, perfect for Vic Falls combined visits. eVisa at evisa.zambiaimmigration.gov.zm is also available. Yellow fever certificate required if from a YF country. Passport must be valid for 6+ months.

Currency: Zambian Kwacha (ZMW), roughly 24 ZMW = $1 USD in 2026. USD widely accepted at safari camps, Vic Falls activities, and tour operators. Card acceptance at major hotels and Lusaka establishments. ATMs in Lusaka, Livingstone, Mfuwe. Bring USD cash in clean small bills ($1, $5, $10, $20) for tipping and remote areas.

Transport. Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN) in Lusaka, direct flights from Joburg (multiple daily), Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Doha. Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula Airport (LVI) in Livingstone, flights from Lusaka, Joburg, Nairobi.

Domestic safari flights on Proflight Zambia to Mfuwe (South Luangwa), Royal (Lower Zambezi), Lukulu (Liuwa), Kasaba Bay (Kafue). $150–350 per leg. Bush flights to remote camps via Wilderness Air, Sky Trails. Self-driving is feasible on main highways but not recommended for safari areas, most travelers fly into camps.

Safety. The standard tourist circuit (Vic Falls/Livingstone, South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi, Kafue) is broadly safe. Lusaka has elevated petty crime in some neighborhoods, use Bolt or hotel transfers at night. Solo female travelers report consistently safe and pleasant experiences. Wildlife encounters are the bigger risk than crime, listen to safari guides.

Health. Yellow fever certificate if applicable. Hepatitis A, Typhoid recommended. Anti-malarials essential for all safari areas (Malarone or doxycycline). Tap water unsafe; bottled is universal at camps.

Tipping. Safari guides $20–30/person/day, camp staff $10–15/person/day to tip pool, Vic Falls tour guides $10/half-day. Bring USD cash for tips.

Language. English is the official language and widely spoken; Bemba, Nyanja, Tonga, Lozi are major Bantu languages. Park rangers and tour guides speak excellent English.

Plug: Type C, D, G (multiple types in use), 230V, bring multiple adapters.

Section 04

Costs, what 7–14 days in Zambia actually runs.

Zambia is upper-mid-tier safari pricing, premium tier camps comparable to Botswana, mid-tier camps comparable to Tanzania.

Daily budget guidelines for 2026 (excluding international flights):

  • Backpacker / hostels and budget Vic Falls: €55–95/day. Hostel dorm or basic guesthouse $25–55, budget activities, restaurant meals $5–15.
  • Mid-range / standard tented camps: €350–600/day per person. Standard South Luangwa or Lower Zambezi camps $400–700/person/night all-inclusive.
  • Comfort / 4–5 star and luxury safari: €700–2,000+/day per person. Premium camps (Time + Tide Chinzombo, Sausage Tree, Royal Zambezi, Wilderness Safaris Busanga Plains) at $1,000–2,500/person/night.

For two adults, 10 days, mid-range, on standard Vic Falls + South Luangwa + Lower Zambezi: budget €7,000–12,000 on the ground, plus international flights ($1,000–1,800/person from US, €700–1,400 from Europe, €400–800 from Joburg).

Where the costs hide.

  • Premium safari camps ($1,000–2,500/person/night) are among Africa's most expensive but include all-inclusive game drives, walking safaris, meals, drinks, transfers.
  • Bush flights: $150–350 per leg.
  • Vic Falls activities add $400–800/couple (bungee $160, rafting $130–200, helicopter $165, Devil's Pool $90).

Where to save.

  • Self-drive Vic Falls and surroundings, Livingstone hotels at $80–250/night; rental car for Vic Falls and Mosi-oa-Tunya activities.
  • Stay at mid-tier safari camps ($400–700/person/night) instead of premium tier.
  • Travel emerald season (December–April), camp rates 50–70% off peak at properties that stay open; trade is rains and reduced game access.
  • Combine with Zimbabwe, KAZA UniVisa makes regional travel affordable.
◉ FAQ

Frequently asked.

Why visit Zambia for safari over Tanzania or Kenya?

Walking safaris and wilderness intimacy. Zambia is the birthplace of the walking safari, Norman Carr pioneered guest-walking in South Luangwa in the 1950s, and it remains the country's specialty. Smaller camps and lower visitor density than Tanzania or Kenya, typically 3–6 vehicles in 100,000+ acres, vs 8–15 vehicles per sighting in the Mara. Excellent guides, the country's guide-training program is Africa's most rigorous. Lower Zambezi canoe safaris are unique. Trade-off: less iconic single-event spectacle (no Great Migration crossings, no Ngorongoro Crater), more about depth and pristine wilderness. Pick Zambia for: walking safaris, repeat safari travelers, intimate camp experiences.

When is the best time for South Luangwa walking safari?

June through October, dry season. September and October are absolute peak, vegetation thinned to nothing, wildlife concentrated at the Luangwa River, hot days but spectacular game viewing. June and July are cooler with peak conditions starting. April–May is the shoulder, green still, dry trails, fewer tourists. November onwards (emerald season): most walking-safari camps close as rains begin. August and September is when leopard sightings peak (the park has one of Africa's highest leopard densities). Walking safaris are typically 4-day mobile foot-safaris with bush camping.

Should I do Devil's Pool?

Yes if visiting October–December and you want a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Devil's Pool is a rim-of-falls swimming hole at Livingstone Island, accessible only at low water (typically September–December, peak October). $90 including transfer to Livingstone Island and lunch. Operated by Tongabezi or AnAbezi. Safety: a natural rock lip prevents you from going over the falls, but it's still swimming on the very edge of a 108m drop. Photo opportunities are extraordinary. Combined with breakfast or lunch on Livingstone Island for the full experience. Can be added to Vic Falls itinerary as a half-day extension.

Do I need a visa for Zambia?

Yes, visa-on-arrival. Single-entry $25 (most Western); double-entry $40; multi-entry $80. KAZA UniVisa ($50, 30 days, multi-entry) covers Zambia + Zimbabwe, perfect for Vic Falls combined visits. eVisa at evisa.zambiaimmigration.gov.zm is also available. Apply on arrival with USD cash (have small bills). Yellow fever certificate required if from a YF country. Passport must be valid for 6+ months.

Is Zambia safe for tourists?

Yes, among the safer African destinations. The standard tourist circuit (Vic Falls/Livingstone, South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi, Kafue) is broadly safe. Lusaka has elevated petty crime in some neighborhoods, use Bolt or hotel transfers at night. Solo female travelers report consistently safe and pleasant experiences. Wildlife encounters on walking safaris are the biggest risk, listen to your guide strictly, don't make sudden movements, follow protocol when meeting wildlife on foot.

How much does a Zambia safari cost in 2026?

For two adults, mid-range, on a 10-day Vic Falls + South Luangwa + Lower Zambezi circuit, budget €7,000–12,000 on the ground, plus international flights ($1,000–1,800/person from US, €700–1,400 from Europe, €400–800 from Joburg). That covers Vic Falls hotels at $150–250/night, mid-tier safari camps at $400–700/person/night all-inclusive, bush flights ($150–350 per leg), park fees, activities. Comfort tier with premium camps (Time + Tide Chinzombo, Sausage Tree, Royal Zambezi) runs €1,500–3,000+/day per couple.

Should I do canoe safari at Lower Zambezi?

Yes, among Africa's most distinctive wilderness experiences. The Lower Zambezi River is broad and slow through the national park, you paddle past elephants drinking, hippos, crocodiles sunning on banks, and African fish eagles fishing. Half-day to multi-day canoe trips with experienced guides. All major Lower Zambezi camps offer canoeing (Sausage Tree, Royal Zambezi, Chongwe River Camp, Old Mondoro). Best months: April–November. Plan 3–4 nights minimum at a Lower Zambezi camp.

What's the Liuwa Plain wildebeest migration?

Africa's second-largest wildebeest migration, 70,000 wildebeest gather November–December as rains arrive on the Liuwa Plain in western Zambia. Far less famous than the Serengeti–Mara migration but equally dramatic in its scale. Reach via King Lewanika Lodge by Time + Tide (the main commercial access; the lodge runs on solar power and has limited capacity). Best months: November and December, with the wildebeest reaching peak concentration mid-November. Plan 3–4 nights. Logistically challenging, requires charter flight from Lusaka.

◉ Packing

What to pack for Zambia.

Zambia is a temperature-extreme safari packing problem, bracing 5–14°C dawn drives in winter, 32–38°C midday in October, plus dust, plus walking safari attire requirements. Comfortable closed-toe walking shoes for safari camps and walking safaris (snake risk). Wide-brim hat with chin strap for windy game-drive vehicles. Neutral-colored safari clothing (khaki, olive, brown, no white because dust, no bright colors at safari, no camouflage which is illegal as military attire). Genuine warm jacket for May–September dawn drives. Quick-dry clothing for Vic Falls spray. Insect repellent (DEET) essential, anti-malarials too. Type C, D, G plug adapter (multi-plug useful). USD cash in small bills ($1, $5, $10, $20) for tips and Vic Falls activities.

drySeasonMayOctober

Layered for massive temperature swing, 5–14°C dawn → 22–32°C midday. Real warm jacket (down preferred), beanie, gloves, thermal base layer for dawn. Layered safari shirts in neutral colors.
